How do I get a food truck permit?
Here's how to get a food truck permit in Boston. There are a few steps you'll need to follow to make sure you're operating legally.
  • Get Necessary Permits and Licenses: Before applying for a food truck permit, you need permits from Inspectional Services and the Fire Department. You'll also need a Hawker and Peddler License, a Business Certificate, a Certificate of Liability Insurance, a business plan, and a written agreement from your commissary. A commissary is a licensed food establishment where you prepare and store food.
  • Apply for a Food Truck Permit: You can apply for a food truck permit online, in person, or by email. The annual application fee is $500. Make the check payable to the City of Boston.
  • Find a Location: Start looking for a location once you submit your application. There are public locations (available through a lottery system) and private locations (requiring permission from the property owner).
  • Fire Department Inspection: Schedule a fire inspection by calling 617-343-3447. Inspections are Monday through Friday, from 8 am - 11 am. Bring your food truck to Fire Prevention at 1010 Massachusetts Avenue, Boston, MA 02218. The fee for a fire permit inspection is $150.
  • Inspectional Services Department (ISD) Inspection: Inspectional Services does inspections for health permits Monday through Friday, from 8 am - 9:30 am. Contact Tom McAdams at 617-961-3293 for more information. Bring your food truck to the Inspectional Services Department at 1010 Massachusetts Avenue, Boston, MA 02218. You'll also need to bring required documents, such as your menu and proof of your commissary.
  • Picking up your permit: Once your food truck permit is approved, you can pick it up at Public Works, 1 City Hall Square, Room 714, Boston City Hall, Boston, MA 02201. Office hours are Monday through Friday, 9 am - 5 pm.

How to Get a Health and Fire Permit for Your Food Truck
To get the permit, you'll need a fire suppression system and a fire extinguisher. You'll have to renew this permit every year. If your truck passes the fire inspection, you'll be given a permit and the fire inspector will sign your food truck permit application.
