Project Goals

On the Square Housing, located at 587-95 Washington St., Dorchester, will build 45 new affordable housing units, on four floors, above an existing single story
commercial block (plus a small vacant lot adjacent to this commercial block). The commercial block is currently fully occupied, and CSNDC is itself the anchor tenant.
Through careful structural additions, we will add the elements needed to support the four new stories, while minimizing both displacement of the sitting tenants, and damage to the existing tenant improvements. This will be
accomplished through adding new footings, supporting a limited number of new structural columns, which in turn will support a concrete podium above the existing roof, on which the new housing floors will be built. One of the tenant spaces will be converted to the new residential circulation core, with ground floor lobby, mechanical and storage rooms, required stairs, and elevator, reaching from
the basement to the top residential floor. – The architect for this project is DHK Architects (Fernando Domenech lead architect): they are a long-established Boston firm, with numerous affordable housing projects (as well as many others) to their credit over the years. CSNDC has previously worked with them to design and build the Levedo Building affordable housing project (241 Talbot Ave.) in Codman Square.
