Winter Weather Trash and Recycling Tips: Help Keep Collection Running Safely
Boston winters bring snow, ice, and challenging conditions. Residents play an important role in keeping collections efficient, safe, and on schedule during winter weather by following a few simple guidelines.
Why it Matters
Winter conditions already slow down collection operations and make it more difficult for our contractors to safely access streets and service collection points. Clear, visible, and properly placed trash and recycling help crews move efficiently through our neighborhoods while reducing safety risks and preventing missed pickups. As keeping our workers safe during inclement weather is our top priority, we appreciate residents’ cooperation and thank everyone for doing their part to help keep our city clean and our collection crews safe.
By taking a few extra steps during winter weather, Boston residents can help keep neighborhoods clean and collection running smoothly all season long.
Keep Collections Running Safely
Timing Matters
To prevent trash and recycling from being buried by snow or plows, residents should place materials at the curb as late as possible, but no later than 6:00 a.m. on collection day. Setting items out too early increases the chance they’ll be covered by snow or blocked from view.
Use Proper Containers
Whenever possible, containerize your trash using sturdy bins with secure lids. Loose bags are more likely to tear or blow away during winter storms. Paper bags and shopping bags are not approved for trash or recycling at any time, as they rip easily when wet and often create litter on our streets.
Keep Items Visible
Visibility is critical for safe and efficient collection, especially during snow events.
- Place trash and recycling where crews can easily see and access them.
- Do not place containers behind or under snowbanks.
- Do not place trash behind parked cars, which can prevent collection.
- If snowfall occurs overnight, take a moment to check that your items are still visible at the curb.
Clear a Safe Path
Please don’t leave carts buried under snow if you are able to shovel them out.
Residents are responsible for clearing snow and ice from sidewalks and around trash and recycling containers. Keeping these areas clear helps collection crews work safely and prevents delays.
