Car-free Streets

We are creating opportunities for people to walk, ride, roll, and build community on city streets.

Car-free streets transform our neighborhoods into safer, healthier, and more vibrant places. By temporarily closing streets to traffic, we are creating opportunities for Boston residents, businesses, and visitors to experience our city in a new way.

Program Benefits

Safer, More Welcoming Streets

Without vehicle traffic, streets become safer for people walking, biking, and rolling. Families, children, and older adults can move more comfortably, encouraging intergenerational use of public space.

Supporting Local Businesses

Car-free events bring people directly onto commercial corridors. Programs like Open Newbury Street and Open Streets Boston have shown that increased foot traffic often translates to more customers for local shops, restaurants, and cafés.

Building Stronger Communities

From neighborhood block parties to citywide street festivals, car-free streets bring neighbors together. They create space for informal gatherings, cultural celebrations, and performances that strengthen community ties.

A Healthier, Greener City

Car-free days reduce air and noise pollution while making space for active transportation. These initiatives support Boston’s climate and public health goals by encouraging walking, biking, and outdoor recreation.
