CONSTRUCTION UNDERWAY
Update as of October 25, 2024
We’re pleased to provide an update on construction work for Back Bay Mobility Projects. Construction schedules are subject to change due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances. Please observe all temporary signage during construction. Contact 311 with any construction related issues.
ARLINGTON STREET (BOYLSTON STREET TO TREMONT STREET)
- Paving will be complete by October 25, 2024
- Installation of pavement markings will begin early next week. Overnight work is scheduled from Sunday, October 27 to Wednesday, October 30 to ensure on-time completion. During this phase, we aim to install new signal equipment and reprogram signals, pending contractor availability.
- Signs and flexposts will be installed after the pavement markings are complete.
- Colored surface treatments will be installed as weather permits. Any remaining detail work will be installed next construction season.
BERKELEY STREET (COLUMBUS AVENUE TO COMMONWEALTH AVENUE)
- Paving will be complete by October 25, 2024
- Installation of pavement markings will begin early next week. Overnight work is scheduled from Sunday, October 27 to Wednesday, October 30 to ensure on-time completion.
- Signs and flexposts will be installed after the markings are complete.
- Colored surface treatments will be installed as weather allows. Any remaining detail work will be installed next construction season.
BEACON STREET (MUGAR WAY TO MASS AVENUE)
- Paving will begin Monday, October 28 through Thursday, October 31.
- Pavement markings will be installed as soon as the week of November 10 following the completion of paving work. To ensure timely completion, overnight work should be expected.
- Signs, pre-cast concrete curbs, and flexposts will be installed after the markings are complete.
- Traffic signal reprogramming will occur as soon as contractor scheduling allows.
- Colored surface treatments will be installed weather permitting. Any remaining details will be installed next construction season.
DARTMOUTH STREET (COMMONWEALTH AVENUE TO BACK STREET)
- Paving will be complete by October 25, 2024
- Pavement markings will be installed as soon as the week of November 3 following the completion of paving work. To ensure timely completion, overnight work should be expected.
- Signs and pre-cast concrete curbs will be installed after the markings are complete.
- Traffic signal reprogramming will occur as soon as contractor scheduling allows.
- Colored surface treatments will be installed weather permitting. Any remaining details will be installed next construction season.

We're connecting Copley Square and the Esplanade and making quick-build safety improvements at the Dartmouth Street/Stuart Street intersection.
Project Updates
UpdatesOn Thursday, May 2, 2024, we hosted a virtual public meeting to share an update on projects in the Back Bay neighborhood. The meeting was publicized on our project websites, via email to subscribers to the Boylston Street, Berkeley Street and Connect Downtown lists, and on Streets Cabinet social media channels. Additionally, Neighborhood Services and elected leaders publicized the meeting to local stakeholders.

We share the data inputs and results of our traffic analysis to support the redesign of the Beacon Street/Berkeley Street intersection in Back Bay.
How we design traffic signals:
- Gather traffic data to understand current conditions.
- Use traffic modeling software to test different designs.
- Our goal is to find a balance between safety, access, and keeping traffic moving smoothly for everyone.
