Having a job as a young person can have many benefits, but it can come with risks too. From 2022 to 2023, child labor violations in the US reached their highest level in about two decades. Recent studies have found that Young workers face high levels of workplace violence and the exploitation of young workers can include wage theft and harassment, and more.

This webinar, led by youth from MassCOSH's Teens Lead at Work program, will help young people (and their parents) know their rights.

The Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) entitles you to a safe workplace, regardless of your documentation status. Your employer must keep your workplace free of known health and safety hazards. You have the right to speak up about unsafe conditions without fear of retaliation and you have the right to workplace health and safety training in a language you understand.

In this webinar, you will learn about:

  • your rights to a safe workplace,
  • how to identify workplace hazards,
  • what kinds of safety equipment might be required on your job,
  • information your employer must share about toxic chemicals, results of tests taken to assess workplace dangers, and records of work-related injuries and illnesses, and
  • how to make a complaint or request an inspection from OSHA and what happens afterward.

In 2020, the Attorney General filed a lawsuit against Lyft and Uber to obtain wages, benefits, and other protections for drivers. The companies reached a settlement with the Massachusetts Attorney General's Office (AGO) that:

  1. provides at least $140 million in back pay to drivers who used the Uber and Lyft Driver apps to provide rides to passengers in Massachusetts between July 14, 2020, and July 2, 2024, and
  2. provides new benefits to all current drivers who use the Uber and Lyft Driver apps to provide trips to passengers.

In this webinar, the Massachusetts AGO will explain how to determine if you are eligible for back pay and the new benefits for drivers, such as minimum wage, paid sick leave, and health insurance.

To request interpretation at no cost, email workers@boston.gov two weeks before the event.
