Reviving Codman Square Merchants Association

The Council is supporting efforts to revive the Codman Square Merchants Association and strengthen the business district in Dorchester. This week, the Council adopted a resolution supporting the association’s efforts to reinvigorate Codman Square, improve conditions for businesses and residents, and find solutions to shared challenges.

Codman Square has been home to a variety of businesses and entrepreneurs for decades, but the area has experienced significant changes over the years. The resolution highlights increased commercial vacancies and challenges related to ongoing construction and street excavations, which have impacted foot traffic and quality of life for residents and businesses in the area.

The resolution also notes recent improvements to the public realm, including the City of Boston’s opening of Codman Square Park and major capital improvements at the Second Church in Dorchester.

Mike Dockery, the longtime owner of Codman Square-based computer store Summit Electronics, and other local entrepreneurs are leading efforts to revitalize the Merchants Association. The group aims to unite businesses to improve conditions in the square, help businesses grow, give back to the neighborhood, and collaborate on solutions to shared challenges.

The Codman Square Merchants Association is planning ways to activate the space, make the square more inviting, beautify the area, and improve safety and access for residents and businesses.
