Andrew Square is a key gateway to South Boston, a bustling transit hub, and a vibrant residential and local business district. It is also a complicated intersection where six busy streets meet together, and is a hot spot for serious and fatal crashes.
We are investing in Andrew Square to better support everyone who travels through. Working with you, we will develop a design that reflects community priorities, creates a better experience for all users, and supports our growing neighborhood.
This project is funded by an Implementation Grant from the Federal Highway Administration’s Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) program.

SHARED VISION FOR ANDREW SQUARE
Based on shared priorities we’ve heard from community members, we have established a framework to guide this redesign. Our goals are to:
- Create a safer and more comfortable experience for people walking
- Ensure safe and reliable access to and from the Andrew Square MBTA station
- Develop clearer, safer, and more efficient paths of travel for car, bus, and truck traffic
WHY NOW?
South Boston residents previously identified Andrew Square as a high priority during the PLAN: South Boston Dorchester Avenue Transportation Plan.
Now, we have funding to develop a new design. We are kicking off community engagement this spring and look forward to hearing your goals. We will work with you to refine the design at every step of the process.

Community Engagement
We created a website platform to mirror our Concept Design Workshop. Anybody who missed the Workshop could use the platform to learn about the four design options and provide input. We will be using the input you provided to help us select a preferred design for the future of Andrew Square.
We advertised the platform on the City's social media, through the project's email newsletter, and by handing out flyers at the Andrew Square MBTA Station during the evening commute.
We hosted an in-person Design Workshop to share the four different design options we are exploring for the future of Andrew Square. We reviewed how each design option addresses your concerns about the intersection's current design.
After presenting those designs, we broke out into smaller group discussions. Community members shared their feedback on design tradeoffs with our facilitators. To close out the meeting, we shared that feedback with the rest of the attendees.
We created a public input platform to learn more about the Andrew Square intersection as part of our Existing Conditions phase. Many safety issues are not captured by data alone, so we asked for your input to fill in the gaps. Over the five weeks the platform was live, 106 of you responded to the survey.
The City hosted a virtual public meeting to kick off the Andrew Square Safety Project. We introduced the project background and purpose and shared what we're learning about the intersection.
Through live polls, we confirmed that attendees' experiences match the data we've explored and learned about people's concerns and priorities in Andrew Square. We also listened to what people think are the most important safety issues in Andrew Square and what kinds of design improvements they would like to see.
