How To Pay The Fine For a Code Violation

If you received a trash or snow and ice ticket from the City, here’s how to pay the fine:

Through our portal, you can search by your ticket number and make a payment online.

Please keep in mind
  • The City of Boston offers constituents easy and convenient options for making online payments through a third-party service provider. The third-party service provider may assess a service fee for processing these payments. Payments made by debit or credit card will be assessed a non-refundable service fee of 2.75% of the total payment amount ($1.00 minimum).
  • If you plan to appeal a code violation, DO NOT pay the fine. If you do, you won't be able to appeal the ticket.

Put your letter together

You can pay your fine by check or money order made payable to the City of Boston. You need to mail us a letter that includes your payment along with your ticket number and the address where the violation took place.

Get your payment together

If you plan to appeal a code violation, DO NOT pay the fine. If you do, you won't be able to appeal the ticket.

We accept cash, credit cards, pinless debit cards, and checks or money orders made payable to the City of Boston.

If you use a credit card or pinless debit card, there is a non-refundable service fee of 2.5% of the total payment, with a $1 minimum. This fee is paid to the card processor and not kept by the City.

PLEASE NOTE:
  • If your debit card requires you to enter your pin to process a payment, you CANNOT use it to pay your fee.

Late fees

Unless you have submitted a written appeal or requested a hearing, you have three weeks to pay the original Code Enforcement fine without a late fee being assessed.  After three weeks, we assess a $10 late fee.
