The African American Master Artist-in-Residence Program (AAMARP) was founded at Northeastern University in 1977 by influential artist and educator Dana C. Chandler, Jr. For nearly fifty years, AAMARP has been a vital outgrowth of the Black Arts Movement in Boston with a mission to afford a “living focus” on “the diverse dynamics of African American aesthetics” by providing studio spaces for artists, presenting numerous exhibitions, and serving as a meaningful meeting place. Several generations of artists working at AAMARP and its orbit have made artworks in a diversity of media, from large-scale paintings and assemblage-based sculptures to textile-based works and photography, often oriented to themes of social justice. Today, the program, still supported by Northeastern University, functions as an artist collective of 14 intergenerational artists—several of them long-term residents—whose works reflect an array of approaches to the art of Africa and the African diaspora.

RPM Festival has been a cornerstone of Boston’s experimental arts scene, providing a platform for groundbreaking filmmakers and media artists. The festival’s commitment to sustainable practices in filmmaking—through small gauge and low-impact production methods—continues to inspire and challenge artists and audiences.

RPM presents an analog synth video program by artist Joost Rekveld (b. 1970), who creates sensory experiences through a dialogue with machines. Rekveld's work explores the sensory consequences of his unique systems, often inspired by forgotten histories in science and technology. This program invites audiences to engage with Rekveld’s mesmerizing visual and auditory landscapes, which reflect his ongoing investigation into the relationships between humans, technology, and perception.

RPM opens the Spring program with a tribute to Jon Behrens (1964-2022), a beloved self-taught artist and pioneer of small-gauge and amateur filmmaking. This program showcases Behrens' impressive four-decade legacy, featuring a diverse collection of his films, ranging from simple and poetic to visually challenging and psychedelic. Behrens’ films, both intimate and expansive, embody his deep commitment to personal, tactile filmmaking and offer a meditative exploration of the moving image.

CANCEL VIOLENCE: ARTISTS SPEAKS presents works by Hakim Raquib, Rob Stull, Johnetta Tinker, Laurence Pierce, Rob “PROBLAK” Gibbs, Shea Justice, Paul Goodnight and L’Merchie Frazier. Through their art, they explore causes of violence and possible correctives in an effort to guide communities toward social healing and restored human wholeness. Images from the exhibition intermixed with video clips of artist talking will be projected on the exterior facade of the museum at dusk thus providing one of the earliest grand scale, artistic screenings on a Roxbury building. It will be a must see.

PROJECTING PEACE is in collaboration with ILLUMINUS and FPoint Productions. It is composed of still and video images created by the visual artists cited above. Preceding the outdoor screening, CANCEL VIOLENCE: ARTISTS SPEAK PROJECTING PEACE will present Love, Queens Who Suffer From Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, an original choreo-poem written and compiled by Jamila Batts Capitman and Heather Thomas. Directed by Capitman, Love, Queens was Inspired by Ntozake Shange’s For Colored Girls Who Have Consider Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf. It explores the impact of violence on communities through dramatic, poetic monologues. A discussion with the playwright and artists moderated by Chaplain Clementina Chéry of the Louis D. Brown Peace Institute follows.
