Over the last few months, the Boston Transportation Department introduced bike sharing to East Boston, adding new stations across the neighborhood. On November 3, Mayor Walsh and Commissioner Fiandaca will celebrate the system's expansion at the new Lewis Mall station near Maverick Square. The Mayor will unveil a new bike that celebrates the diverse heritage of East Boston residents and present golden Hubway keys to East Boston organizations that helped bring the popular bike sharing program to the neighborhood.

New Balance Hubway is the regional public bike share system providing bikes for transportation and recreation in the municipalities of Boston, Brookline, Cambridge and Somerville. The system offers more than 1600 bikes at 180 stations and has over 14,000 members. The popular system recently reached a major milestone with the recording of the 5 millionth ride!

Two of the new Hubway stations were funded by a process called Youth Lead the Change, where young residents between 12 and 25 years old can decide how to spend $1M of the City's budget. Through a citywide vote, Boston youth prioritized installing these stations in neighborhoods where residents had limited transportation options.

The Boston Transportation Department led a comprehensive community process that included well-attended public meetings and a series of “on the street” surveys about potential locations for the system. East Boston residents and business owners guided the locations for the ten new stations, ultimately selecting the following sites:

  • Chelsea Street at Saratoga Street
  • Bennington Street at Byron Street
  • Orient Heights MBTA Station - Bennington Street at Saratoga Street
  • The Eddy at New Street
  • Maverick Square - Lewis Mall
  • East Boston Neighborhood Health Center
  • Piers Park - Marginal Street at East Boston Shipyard
  • Glendon Street at Condor Street
  • Airport MBTA Station - Bremen Street at Brooks Street
  • Central Square (pending construction)
