What is motor vehicle excise tax?

In Massachusetts, registered vehicle owners pay an annual tax on their vehicle called motor vehicle excise tax. Owners can pay the bill online, in person, or by mail.

When is payment due?

The tax is annual. Payment is due within 30 days of the date listed on the bill.

How much do I have to pay?

The amount you pay is based on the taxable value of your vehicle. The taxable value is a percentage of the manufacturer's list price for your vehicle based on the year it was made. You pay 2.5% on the taxable value.
