Katie Whewell
Katie is the Deputy Director of Planning and Development for the City of Newton, where she helps lead the City’s planning, zoning, and growth efforts. Before assuming a leadership role in the department, Katie’s background consisted of several years of development review with the various permitting bodies in Newton and efforts to streamline the permitting process as well as Planning Department operations and procedures. Katie works on a wide range of land use initiatives, development review, personnel management and long-range planning while collaborating with residents, external permitting teams, elected officials, and City staff.
Katie holds a Master’s degree in City Planning from Boston University and is passionate about creating thoughtful, well-designed communities through sound planning and collaborative problem-solving. Katie enjoys applying her professional planning experience to the City of Boston’s zoning processes while serving on the Board of Appeal. Before pursuing her Master’s degree, Katie obtained her undergraduate degree in Political Science (minor in history) from Emmanuel College. She also holds a paralegal certificate from Boston University.
In her personal time, Katie enjoys traveling to other walkable cities, train travel, listening to Taylor Swift and Bruce Springsteen while going for walks and exploring Boston’s neighborhoods.
