DECEMBER 5–6

Orange Line service will be suspended between Back Bay and Forest Hills full-day on December 5–6, starting Friday, to continue signal upgrade work. 

  • Free and accessible shuttle bus service will make stops between Back Bay and Forest Hills. There will be no shuttle bus service between Back Bay and North Station. Riders using the shuttle bus service should budget at least 30 minutes of additional travel time. 
  • Riders are also encouraged to consider fare-free Commuter Rail service between Forest Hills, Ruggles, Back Bay, and South Station.

DECEMBER 8–22

Green Line service will be suspended between North Station and Babcock Street, Kenmore, and Heath Street on December 8–22 for critical infrastructure upgrades.

Alternative services will be offered to replace Green Line train service on segments of the B, C, D, and E branches. 

  • B Branch: free and accessible shuttle buses will operate between Babcock Street and Copley/Back Bay. Bus Route 57 will also be fare-free during this service change.
  • C/D Branch: free and accessible shuttle buses will operate between Kenmore and Copley/Back Bay. The fare gates will be open at Kenmore station, and all surface-level stops west of Kenmore will be fare-free. 
  • E Branch: Bus Route 39 will operate fare-free, and supplemental buses will be added to accommodate additional ridership.

  • Accessible van service is available for Green Line stops between Copley/Back Bay and North Station.

Downtown subway stations will not be serviced by shuttle buses. Riders can use the Orange Line at Back Bay toward North Station for continued service through downtown. Riders using the shuttle bus service should budget an additional 20 minutes of travel time to their regular commute. 

The City of Boston will be offering five free Bluebikes unlocks during this closure. Use code MBTAGREEN128 while supplies last. See the Bicycle Information section below for more information and a suggested bike route. Additionally, the Worcester Commuter Rail Line will be fare-free between South Station, Back Bay, and Lansdowne. During the Green Line shutdown from December 8-22, the City of Boston is offering five (5) free Bluebikes unlocks, while supplies last. NOTE: You will be charged for lost bikes, ebike rides ($.25/minute), and rides on classic bikes over 30 minutes ($.25/minute). Use code MBTAGREEN128 during the closure. Download the Bluebikes app or visit bluebikes.com to join or log in. On the app, select "Rewards" and use promo code: MBTAGREEN128. Fill out your information. Note: You will be charged for lost bikes, ebike rides ($.25/minute), or rides on classic bikes over 30 minutes. Check out a bike using your Bluebikes mobile app, key, or credit or debit card. Return the bike to a station after your trip.
