South Street Drop-In Session

We want to hear from you about upcoming bike projects in Allston and Brighton, including South Street.

We are working on a number of bike projects this year as part of our work to quickly close gaps across the City in Boston's emerging network of low-stress bike routes. We are holding an outdoor drop-in session on South Street. We will have a table set up outside at the corner of South Street and Commonwealth Avenue. Drop in anytime to ask questions, view materials, and learn more about the project. In the event of rain, we'll postpone to Monday, May 15, 4:30 - 6:30 p.m. (announced on the project webpage).

City Nature Challenge at Roslindale Wetlands Urban Wild

Join the Urban Wilds Program and Mass Audubon staff in the City Nature Challenge, an international competition among cities to document the most wildlife. You will explore these wetlands and woodlands and work with us to identify the plants and animals that call Roslindale Wetlands Urban Wild home.

It’s a competition where cities are in a friendly contest with each other to see who can make the most observations of nature, who can find the most species, and who can engage the most people” (www.citynaturechallenge.org). We will focus on exploring the plants and animals of this wetland and woodland. The species information we find will be helpful in guiding additional restoration efforts at this Urban Wild.

No experience or expertise necessary! Come with sturdy footwear, the iNaturalist app downloaded, and your curiosity.

Join the Urban Wilds Program and National Park Service staff in the City Nature Challenge, an international competition among cities to document the most wildlife. You will explore this shoreline and help us to identify shellfish, crabs, and all sorts of other animals and plants.

Please note:
  • No online registration. You can drop in and leave at any time between 1 - 4 p.m.
  • No expertise or experience required. But, bring sturdy and waterproof shoes, and your curiosity!

We will use iNaturalist for our nature observations, so we recommend you arrive with the app downloaded. iNaturalist tutorials will happen at 1:30 - 2:30 p.m. This program will be largely self-directed and is family-friendly for ages 6 and up.

Join the Boston Public Health Commission and the Parks and Recreation Department for a 45-minute stationary spin class! Participants will experience a fun exercise class on a stationary Bluebikes bike led by a certified fitness instructor. They will also learn how to sign out and pick up a bike, redock the bike, and use the bike to ride around the city.  Free 30-day Bluebikes memberships will be given out to those who register and show up!

*Due to anticipated no-shows, we will be giving out more tickets than bikes available. Bikes will be available on a first-come-first-serve basis. If more participants join than bikes, we will lead an alternate cardio class alongside the riders so everyone will receive a great workout!

Hike Boston - Ranger Led Emerald Necklace Hike

Hike Boston is a week-day day-time hiking series where we invite you to join us for a walk in one of Boston's parks or urban wilds.

Boston Park Rangers, Urban Wilds staff, or Parks employees will provide formal and informal discussions or tours during the hikes. Some hikes may be more focused on taking a walk in the park, while others may be more informational.

Hikes will explore different wilderness or park areas of Boston. Hikes will take place primarily on unpaved paths. Programs will last about one hour and length may vary.

Ranger Evans and Ranger Smith will be leading a walking tour of a section of the Emerald Necklace starting at the JP boat house and making our way to the Back Bay Fens. This tour will explore the evolution of the Emerald  Necklace from a patch work of farm land, indigenous lands and swamps to the parks we see and use today. We'll also be highlighting the local flora and fauna in these parks as well. This tour will meet at the Boat House in Jamaica Pond at 10am and will end in the Back Bay Fens spanning 3.5 - 4.5 hours in length (10am-2pm). It's recommended that participants bring comfortable shoes and lots of water. The rain date for this event will be the following Wednesday 7/3/24 with the same start/end location and times.

Description: Tour the overlook and ruins in Franklin Park. The tour will highlight historical features of Franklin Park which will allow the audience to leave with a better historical understanding of what remains. Tours vary in length from 1 mile up to 3-4 miles. Depending on the length, they can last from 30 minutes up to 1.5 hours. Starting and ending location will be behind the zoo along Pierpont Rd near the softball field.  Restrooms and drinking water may or may not be available, come prepared with whatever you will need for the walk or hike.
